The Quest Home: Received a 4+ star review, making it an IndieReader Approved title.
Following find an interview with author Daniel C. Davis:
1. What is the name of the book and when was it published?
The book is titled The Quest Home, and it was published on September 3rd, in honor of my mother’s birthday.
2. What’s the book’s first line?
“Three defining moments in my childhood shaped my understanding of what it truly means to be home.”
3. What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch.”
The Quest Home is a deeply personal memoir that traces my journey from childhood wisdom to adult reality—from learning what “home” meant to actually building one. With raw honesty and heartfelt vulnerability, I explore the pivotal moments, painful losses, and intentional daily choices that shaped my understanding of love, connection, and family. The book reveals that home isn’t a destination; it’s something you build every day with the people you love.
4. What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?
I had already begun a series of books I call The Quest Series (including The Quest Within Me and My Quest to Love), and I always knew a third book belonged in that collection. I began drafting it in 2015 after getting married, but it didn’t feel complete. In 2023, when my mother passed away, writing became the only way I could process that grief. The lessons I learned during that time—about love, loss, and rebuilding—became the heart of this book.
5. What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?
One of the most meaningful takeaways is the exploration of grief. It’s something many people don’t talk about until they’re forced to face it. I wanted to show that it’s okay to not be okay, and that healing can happen slowly, honestly, and with help. Readers have shared that the book helps them feel seen and supported through their own experiences.
6. When did you first decide to become an author?
My mother believed I had a gift for explaining feelings and encouraged me to write whenever I felt overwhelmed. That guidance carried me into adulthood. In many ways, she prepared me for her passing by giving me the tools I would need to navigate grief. That’s when I truly embraced becoming an author.
7. Is this the first book you’ve written?
No. The Quest Home is my fifth book. I write fiction, nonfiction, and children’s literature, and I have more projects underway. Readers can explore my full catalog at dancdavisauthor.com.
8. What do you do for work when you’re not writing?
I work in cybersecurity as a Deputy Director of Cyber Services and a Governance, Risk, and Compliance SME.
9. How much time do you generally spend on your writing?
As a husband, father, and full-time professional, I write whenever I can find the time. My wife and son are incredibly supportive, and that support makes all the difference.
10. What’s the best and the hardest part of being an indie?
The hardest part is definitely the promotion—getting your work in front of readers is a challenge. The best part is the creative freedom to tell the stories that matter most to you in the way you believe they should be told.
11. What’s a great piece of advice you can share with fellow indie authors?
Keep creating and refining your craft. Seek constructive criticism, not just praise. Growth comes from stretching yourself and learning from honest feedback.
12. Would you go traditional if a publisher came calling? If so, why?
If the situation felt right, yes. I’m open to opportunities that honor the work and help it reach a wider audience.
13. Is there something in particular that motivates you (fame? fortune?)
Neither. I simply want to tell great stories—stories that move people, comfort them, or help them see themselves more clearly.
14. Which writer, living or dead, do you most admire?
Paulo Coelho.
15. Which book do you wish you could have written?
The Alchemist, my favorite book of all time.
