PLUS-SIZE: A Memoir of Pop Culture, Fatphobia, and Social Change
Winner of the 2026 IndieReader Discovery Awards in Pop Culture, Nonfiction
What’s the book’s first line?
“Sometimes I think the most American thing about me is that I’m considered 20-30 pounds overweight.”
What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.
Plus-Size chronicles the rise of the body positivity movement through personal reflections and pop culture reviews of media from the 90s, 2000s, 2010s, to today.
What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?
I was an immigration organizer after the 2016 presidential election. I realized how in over our heads we were and how much social progress was being rolled back. So I wrote down my memories in an effort to preserve them and they ended up forming this book.
What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?
Plus-Size is a feminist pop culture bible and a roadmap to how fatphobia operates in society, the media and popular culture.
Is this the first book that you’ve written?
Yes, Plus-Size is my first book.
What do you do for work when you’re not writing?
I am a Body and Food Positive Therapist.
What’s the best and the hardest part of being an indie?
The best part is being in full creative control of my book. I made all of the executive decisions so it truly reflects my vision.
What’s a great piece of advice that you can share with fellow indie authors?
Don’t give up before the miracle happens
Would you go traditional if a publisher came calling? If so, why?
Maybe. Depends on what the contract looks like.
Is there something in particular that motivates you (fame? fortune?)
I had vital information that needed to be in the hands of the people and I found a way to achieve that.
