A Pyrrhic Victory. Volume III, Fate received a 4+ star review, making it an IndieReader Approved title.

Following find an interview with author Ian Crouch.

What is the name of the book and when was it published?

A Pyrrhic Victory. Volume III, Fate. Published, 16th August 2022.

What’s the books first line?

“It was late in the second day of the Battle of Asculum, where Pyrrhus had crushed the Roman legions but at a great cost to his own army.”

What’s the book about? Give us the pitch.

This is the third volume in the trilogy about the life and times of King Pyrrhus of Epirus. This volume continues the narrative about Pyrrhus’ great struggle with Rome. He had invaded Italy to help the city of Tarentum and other southern Italian peoples against the incursions of the Romans. This is the last chance for the Greeks to retain their independence.

What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?

I have had a life-long fascination with Greek and Roman history.

What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?

It provides an insight into the remarkable life of King Pyrrhus, who was a critically important figure in the struggle between Greece and Rome.

What’s the most distinctive thing about the main character. Who – real or fictional – would you say the character reminds you of?

The greatness of his character, and his importance in history.

The person who comes to mind is Erwin Rommel. A man of extraordinary achievements, who was admired equally by friend and foe.

When did you first decide to become an author?

When I wanted to make my contribution to the literature about Greco-Roman history, about twenty years ago.  Volume I was published in 2010. Volume II in 2015.

Is this the first book you’ve written?

No. There are the other two volumes of the trilogy.

What do you do for work when you’re not writing?

I am a doctor, in general medical practice.

How much time do you spend on your writing?

Usually, two evenings a week.

What’s the best and hardest thing about being an indie?

It is difficult to be noticed in a world with so much literature available. The best thing is the opportunity to be published when the doors of traditional publishing are closed.

What’s a great piece of advice that you can share with fellow indie authors?

Enjoy the writing journey.

Would you go to traditional if a publisher came calling? If so, why?

I would welcome the opportunity if it came about, as it may offer additional means to the ends of sales and recognition.

Is there something in particular that motivates you (fame? fortune?)

The pleasure of the writing is the most important thing, also the recognition from people whose opinion I respect.

Which writer, living or dead, do you most admire?

Homer was an inspirational figure to me, crafting the wonderful Greek legends.

Which book do you wish you could have written?

I would have to say “Dune”, by Frank Herbert. In my view, the greatest masterpiece of fiction of the 20th Century.
