TOO STRONG FOR YOUR OWN GOOD

By Anette DeMattio

TOO STRONG FOR YOUR OWN GOOD is full of vigorous, enthusiastic encouragement to let go of fears and doubts and move forward trusting in intuition, self-love, and higher spiritual guidance. The tone of the writing is kind and supportive, never critical or scolding. Her writing style is intensely staccato, full of short, frequently incomplete sentences, which make it feel driven and focused. That is, presumably, an approachable style for the successful, highly-motivated women who are its target audience, though perhaps exhausting for others. However, deMatttio, in her enthusiasm, goes a bit overboard with mystical jargon—“I watched it [fears, doubt, and stored pain] float away in their divine container, then asked them to flood the space with golden light activating crystalline keys of light information for my body.” Some of her assertions, too, are more pseudoscientific than evidence-based—citing unspecified “ancient cultures” as if our ancestors were any more unified on spiritual/religious beliefs than we are, for example, or quoting the rather dubious Emoto study on intention and its effect on water crystallization as if it were scientific consensus. Still, the core advice is reasonably sound, and the symbolism may be helpful to many readers.
