THREE SILENT CRIES: Three Battles, One Unheard Scream at a Time is not a book for the faint of heart—nor was it intended to be. Marlene Zaedyan divides it into three interconnected, yet distinct, novellas about silencing: one through institutional indifference, another through cultural shame, and the third through fearful protection. These three stories are bound by consequences, not by a single narrative thread.

In "Fragments of Eliot," suspense is replaced by looking inward at the type of historical event that can create violence. Through the course of the investigation, Zaedyan slowly reveals the systemic abuse at the orphanage where Eliot spent his childhood. A major aspect of the "truth" of the events that occurred there would typically have felt redemptive and triumphant when revealed through the courts and media. However, instead of being redeemed, Eliot is overwhelmed by all of the attention surrounding him. The media and court proceedings reveal the injustice of the way Eliot has been treated, but he still has all of the same emotional scars. Zaedyan's prose here employs a great deal of reflection and often approaches a didactic tone. However, the writing is done out of conviction; readers are supposed to remain uncomfortable with what they are reading, instead of simply moving past it. At times, the craft is effective enough to make the silence itself feel oppressive. Rooms feel heavy, there are many unresolved conversations, and people fall in love with others who don't love them back.

"Strands of Tradition" is very much a geographical and emotional departure from the previous novella. In Afghanistan, Youssef's inability to speak is a representation of everything that his father, Mohammed, will never be able to accept. He views sensitivity as weakness, and he believes that if he shows any sense of weakness, it will turn into cruel behavior toward Youssef.  

“The Silent Love” is the quietest and, in some ways, the most affecting. Ronnie, a child with delayed speech and developmental challenges, forms a tender connection with Lola. Their bond is innocent, tentative, and entirely believable. The rupture comes not from the children, but from adults. Salma’s fear for her daughter reframes the relationship, and that fear fractures both families as Zaedyan examines how love can distort under anxiety. No one is villainized outright; instead, everyone is trapped by their own protective instincts.

Across all three novellas, Zaedyan argues that silence, whether it comes from institutions, culture, or fear, breeds damage that echoes across generations. The book occasionally overstates its themes, but its emotional sincerity carries it through. THREE SILENT CRIES lingers after the final page not because it shocks, but because it refuses to look away.
