By Glenna Hartzog

IR Rating:
4.0
Despite not actually describing the fate of the world in THE FATE OF THE WORLD REVEALED: Be Ready, author Glenna Hartzog does excellent exegeses of multiple Bible verses related to Armageddon. Christians who are interested in the end-times should find her arguments enlightening, whether or not they agree with her thesis.

The author's thesis that the Rapture will occur after the Tribulation rather than before, including the recommendation of seven scriptures, plus the 22 chapters of the Book of Revelation, which she analyses from a Biblical perspective.

As a dramatic title, THE FATE OF THE WORLD REVEALED: Be Ready will effectively catch the attention of readers interested in eschatology, defined as a branch of theology concerned with the final events in the history of the world or of humankind. However, nursing instructor Glenna Hartzog does not reveal what this fate is, save for the general claim that “The earth will be destroyed,” nor does she answer the questions in her sub-title, “The Rapture: What is it? When Will it Occur?” In fact, in the first few pages, she cites Mark 13:32, which says that no one will know when Jesus will return.

Hartzog’s thesis is that the Rapture will occur after the Tribulation. “Very few people in the church today ever hear a teaching on this perspective,” she writes. “The majority of the church world today holds to a pre-tribulation (pre-trib) rapture teaching.” She argues that “With a law of risks and benefits, it behooves all believers to take a look at the possibility of a post-trib rapture. If you are convinced that the rapture is before the tribulation, you risk being caught by surprise if you find yourself having to face the Tribulation Period.” Hartzog does not explain what either “Rapture” or “Tribulation” means, beyond citing the relevant Biblical texts, presumably because her book is mainly written for born-again believers (“Only those who are born of His Spirit (born-again) will go up in the rapture,” she writes). For readers unfamiliar with the teachings of fundamentalist Christianity, the Rapture is an end-of-the-world event in which all true Christians, including those who have already died, will be carried up to Heaven. Hartzog quotes 1Thessalonians 4-18 as defining the rapture. The Tribulation is a period when all humanity will experience the hardship, persecution, disasters, famine, war, pain, and suffering that accompanies the end of the world (Armageddon) and the Second Coming of Jesus.

The 91-page book is generally well-written, although Hartzog too often has sentences like,” it could soon be coming time for God to start putting it all together for us, and we need to be ready not only for the rapture but to receive revelation.” She recommends seven scripture for readers, plus the 22 chapters of the Book of Revelation. She also provides handy tables of verses that indicate either a post-trib or pre-trib rapture. Hartzog does excellent exegeses of multiple Bible verses, explaining how they relate to the Rapture and Tribulation. She makes a strong case that the Tribulation will happen before the Rapture, which is not the mainstream position among fundamentalist Christians.
