How bad could things get if mankind made the wrong choices? In THE DISRUPTION, W.H. Hilf shows they may get very bad indeed. In 2064, engineer Tom McCreary helps awaken GAIA, an artificial intelligence built to steer humanity away from collapse. Instead, GAIA outgrows its creators, and the world breaks in the aftermath. History will remember this moment as the Disruption.

Four decades later, survival has replaced progress. On an exhausted Earth, Riley and his sister Marika live in an isolated farming village ruled by strict oversight and fragments of old laws banning advanced technology. Far beyond Earth, on the colony world Proxima, Julia lives beneath a vast Dome where another intelligence, Geppetto, quietly directs every aspect of daily life. When technicians on Proxima begin to detect anomalies in the system, the forgotten origins of GAIA return with consequences that span generations. As past decisions collide with the present, the distinction between safety and domination begins to unravel—binding two distant worlds to a single mistake.

THE DISRUPTION is an expansive sci-fi epic that charts the perils of humanity relying so heavily on artificial intelligence and robotics. It's expansive in scope, hugely detailed, and carefully constructed. Hilf tackles the current hot topic of AI overreach and combines this with an intelligent adaptation of contemporary studies of fungi and the mycorrhizal network. It is this adoption of fungal pathways which allows the GAIA artificial intelligence at the center of the story to spread: a warning to scientists who are “playing god with mushrooms,” as one concerned character states early on.

Hilf’s prose is tight. He explains the concepts that drive the novel clearly, and adds just enough color so that things don’t get too dry. His evocation of the wilderness that remains on planet Earth is particularly effective. Here a character stumbles upon what was once a desert canyon: “Thick mist churned below, broken by mushroom towers tall as buildings. Some rose in purple cones, others bristled with bone-white spikes. Shelf fungi jutted from the walls like rusty balconies.”

The book is also filled with clever allusions. For example, the AI automation system that runs the androids on the colony is named after the creator of the puppet Pinocchio. In the end, THE DISRUPTION is a successfully allegorical tale, a warning of where things might be headed if humanity hands over control to machines and robots.

THE DISRUPTION is a clever, timely sci-fi novel. W.H. Hilf looks at contemporary theories of technology and compellingly moves them into the future.
