In OH, WOW! APE, BEAVER, COW: ABC Animal Rhymes, Terri Powell presents a playful alphabet-based picture book that's interested in animal rhymes and imaginative situations. Every letter introduces a new creature paired with short verses built around sound-based repetition and lighthearted language, aiming to create an engaging read-aloud experience for very young children and their caretakers.
The book’s premise is straightforward, and Powell’s enthusiasm for rhyme and wordplay is evident. It’s especially endearing knowing that many of these rhymes came naturally from spending time with her own children. The pages embrace an intentionally silly tone, with animals riding in boats, balancing ice cream scoops, or searching for pumpkin pie in the sky. The repetitive structure also makes the book easy for young readers to follow as it moves from letter to letter and keeps their attention with vibrant illustrations (by Anniella Ragaza).
However, the execution often struggles to maintain consistency. The rhymes vary significantly in rhythm and flow, with some passages reading smoothly while others feel forced or uneven. Because the book relies so heavily on rhyme as its primary storytelling device, these inconsistencies become difficult to ignore over the course of a 28-page book that many families will likely attempt to read in a single sitting. Several pages are more focused on finding something that rhymes than creating memorable phrases that make sense. Age-appropriate, yes; but for the ones doing the reading out loud, it can feel stilted.
The illustrations present an additional challenge. While colorful and energetic, the artwork frequently lacks the polish expected from a professional picture book. Character designs and page layouts are simplistic, which in and of itself isn’t a bad thing, but the artwork and composition of the book could have benefitted from additional editing. Families will likely feel this difference when reading OH, WOW! APE, BEAVER, COW amongst other, more carefully produced books on their shelves.
That said, the work's sincerity is clear throughout. Powell approaches the material with humor and genuine enthusiasm for language development. Younger children may still enjoy portions of the book’s absurd imagery and repetitive sounds during read-aloud sessions, particularly in shorter sittings. OH, WOW! APE, BEAVER, COW ends up feeling like a well-meaning alphabet picture book with an energetic concept, but its uneven rhyming and unpolished artwork prevent it from fully achieving the charm and readability it aims for.
Though clearly created with warmth and enthusiasm for playful language, Terri Powell’s OH, WOW! APE, BEAVER, COW: ABC Animal Rhymes struggles with inconsistent rhyming and underdeveloped artwork—resulting in a read-aloud experience that feels more homemade than polished.
