In Steven Cary’s NEXTGEN, readers follow two bands: one is led by well-established superstar and AutoGen Helene Shock, and the second is a newly formed punk-inspired band comprising a group of young friends. But the friends are breaking the law in a world where only AutoGen (a framework for artificial intelligence) performs tasks while humans become over-reliant on se7ens, a new drug used to fight depression. Will the friends be able to follow their passions, and how will Helene’s world change as she grows ever more sentient?

This work is told from Henry's and Helene's points of view. Henry’s perspective gives readers insight into how drastically life has changed for humans with the rise of AI. Helene’s perspective focuses on the abilities of AutoGen, along with glimpses of the politics and motivations of those working to maintain the new status quo. Both perspectives explore the concept that “technology was supposed to…enhance our lives, not replace them by taking away the things that give us meaning.” This balance is strong and provides depth to the world.

And that world is fascinating, set in a near future when AI has been created to do anything humans need—negating the necessity for people to work or go to school. This has led to unforeseen mental health issues and an increased use of se7ens. While meant to fight depression, it is addictive—which obviously leads to more problems for users. Cary excels at exploring the consequences of taking away all responsibilities and motivation for people.

There are some issues relating to the expansive nature of the worldbuilding, however, the biggest involving a lack of relevant information. Acronyms and terms are used without context, and they aren't defined until much later. Also, the time spent on describing the world detracts from the time given to creating fully fleshed-out characters. The characters are fine enough to support the plot, but they aren't developed beyond that. By the end of the novel, they still don't feel like real people. This also makes the romances feel out of place and difficult to become invested in.

Similarly, the narrative isn't complex or engaging. It moves forward linearly and steadily, without the ups and downs or tension expected in a plot with this sort of action. However, Cary does incorporate music strongly, from the two bands that the story follows to classic rock references. There is also the theme of how music can bring people together and heal the soul. A thought-provoking discussion concerning balance takes place, about how sadness is “part of truly experiencing the world” despite the attempt to remove all negativity from life. In the end, Cary reminds readers that “it’s okay to be sad—not just okay, it’s wonderful to be sad, it’s necessary to be sad.”

Henry’s and Helene’s parallel journeys in Steven Cary's NEXTGEN remind readers that, in a world where things feel hopeless, music can unite, heal, and bring balance in a way that seems almost magical.
