Fred Gracely’s MOON SPIRIT offers a captivating blend of urban fantasy and coming-of-age drama, inviting readers into a world where moonlight harbors magic and ancient forces lurk in the shadows. The story centers on Max Berger, a teenage orphan whose mundane life at the Helpren Municipal Orphanage takes an extraordinary turn during one fateful full moon. Desperately longing for a family to call his own, Max’s world is upended when he encounters a mesmerizing moon spirit named Sarina and agrees to safeguard a mysterious magical artifact. Suddenly thrust into a perilous adventure that spans centuries of hidden history, Max must navigate a treacherous landscape populated by dark forces beyond his understanding. As Max comes to grips with his new reality, he discovers that family can take many forms, and that the bonds forged in the face of danger may be the strongest of all.

Throughout MOON SPIRIT, Gracely weaves together familiar elements of urban fantasy with strong, imaginative worldbuilding. The gritty reality of Max’s life at Helpren Municipal Orphanage contrasts sharply with the ethereal elements. From the “cracked tarmac back lot” of Helpren to the moonlit scenes where “long silvery robes billowed gently, leaving a wake of tiny sparkles,” Gracely’s vivid writing brings both worlds to life.

For all of its magic, action, and lore, MOON SPIRIT is chiefly an exploration of family and belonging. Max’s journey from lonely orphan to cherished member of an unconventional family is both touching and relatable. The dynamics between Max, Marta, Sam, and Zoe are particularly well-drawn. The banter and bickering feels very authentic to the teenage experience, something the following exchange perfectly captures:

“‘I filled a lifesaver,’ Zoe said.

Lucy frowned. ‘You did what, dear?’

Sam slammed his fist into his palm. ‘I killed a veptor!’

‘After I blinded it,’ Marta corrected.”

Considering the intended YA audience, the pacing here is appropriately brisk, with Max and his newfound foster siblings careening from one perilous situation to the next as they unravel the mysteries of the Orb. Gracely also skillfully incorporates flashbacks and visions that reveal the tragic history of Alimona/Ramoteb, adding some real depth (via a dual narrative of sorts) to the story.

While the novel’s climax delivers on action and spectacle, some readers may find some of the unexpected twists a tad convenient. Additionally, the magical system itself could benefit from more consistent rules and clearer boundaries (The Orb seems to possess an ever-expanding array of powers that occasionally verge on deus ex machina). Hardly fatal flaws for an otherwise engaging narrative, but there’s definitely ample room for growth in future installments. As it stands, however, MOON SPIRIT is both a highly entertaining read and a promising start to what could potentially be a must-read series.

Young adult readers and fans of urban fantasy alike will find much to enjoy in Fred Gracely’s MOON SPIRIT, a magical adventure that reminds us that family can be found in the most unexpected places.
