Tyler Beauchamp’s FREEZE FRAME introduces readers to Will Horner, a sixteen-year-old who suffers from the aftereffects of childhood trauma, including episodic hallucinations which substantially interfere with his routine life activities. His last episode happened in the school lunchroom in front of other students and was so embarrassing and devastating for him that he and his parents felt it necessary for him to change schools. Making matters worse are Will’s severe insecurities and a troubled father who doesn’t understand his condition or the most effective way to deal with it. Will’s love for making his own films is both rewarding and potentially detrimental, since it can conjure up memories of past traumatic events. People in his life have differing opinions on the subject, pulling Will in opposing directions. But he is strong and determined to do what he loves. More importantly, he wants to be as normal a kid as is possible despite the naysayers, previous distressing experiences, and the many obstacles in his way.
Beauchamp’s writing style is engaging and well-suited for FREEZE FRAME and the author’s impressive skills in characterization provide many layers of Will’s personality, making it easy to have empathy for him and his situation. Even though the Will character is unusual, he comes across as realistic, believable, and relatable. His actions, dialogue, and internal thoughts allow readers to form an emotional connection with him and understand the pain and confusion he endures. But it’s not only the remarkable characterization that makes FREEZE FRAME a memorable story—its originality contributes to its noteworthiness. Most readers will go on a journey they have not been on before, one they will not easily forget as they get drawn into and experience Will’s story for themselves. And while the conclusion isn’t the usual “happily ever after,” it is a satisfying ending with all loose ends tied up and enough possibilities to warrant a sequel.
A well-written, informative, and entertaining coming-of-age story, Tyler Beauchamp’s FREEZE FRAME skillfully addresses myriad issues faced by many teenagers, all under the guise of a compelling fictional tale.

FREEZE FRAME by Tyler Beauchamp is a fictional yet solid storyline about a teenage photographer who experiences psychotic episodes that keep him from staying in the “real” world. After transferring to a new school, the boy tries to keep his secret from classmates, but a collaborative project, conflicting emotions and his fragile mental state make everything a challenge. Descriptive paragraphs, witty dialogue, and a rather unique approach to mental health struggles give this fresh coming-of-age novel a thumbs-up for teens and adults alike.
