FOLLOW YOU DOWN

A nostalgic summer romance about second chances, rediscovering oneself, and learning that it’s never too late to follow your heart.
Katie Walsh’s FOLLOW YOU DOWN begins with Kate falling into a mid-life crisis brought on by her divorce, losing her job, and an unfortunate event at a spa. Her best friend Nikki convinces her to spend some time in Chatham, Massachusetts, a place where the two of them summered together in early college. Though Kate hasn’t been there since she had her heart broken in 2002, she agrees, and soon finds herself staying in a luxurious inn with a handsome younger employee. Growing nostalgic, Kate tries to understand who she is and what she needs to find happiness.
FOLLOW YOU DOWN is told using two timelines: the primary one is set in 2025, the secondary in 2002. They are woven together well, seamlessly transitioning in a way that enables them to build on each other as the book goes on. Readers who were teenagers in the early 2000s are sure to love the many song references included throughout the book. This aspect is fun, adding to the strength and feel of the setting while contributing to a strong dose of nostalgia.
Walsh excels at incorporating imagery that enhances the reading experience. Descriptions of food and drinks, such as “[the wine] tasted like crisp pear and grapefruit with hints of vanilla and honey, finished with floral undertones,” made it possible to almost taste what Kate was tasting. Descriptions of the setting are just as vivid, with passages like “The sky was a vibrant blend of pink and orange, the colors reflecting on the water as the waves lapped gently against the shore” bringing the work to life. The setting is utilized well in both timelines, and feels particularly vibrant in the 2025 one—creating a perfect backdrop for Kate’s romance and self-discovery.
Kate is a relatable protagonist, with plenty of vulnerability and emotional depth. The dual timelines allow readers to see how she became the woman she is in 2025, which makes her emotional journey that much more engaging. However, it’s the relationship between Kate and Nikki that steals the show. Their interactions are humorous and heartfelt, and the support that they give each other makes for many beautiful moments. Kate and Matt’s romance is also well-written; the chemistry between the two is evident in every interaction, and their banter is charming.
While this work does explore many emotional topics, its conflicts and discussions are often too easily resolved to feel as impactful as they could. In most instances, the characters know exactly what they’re feeling and how best to articulate it, as well as what they need to resolve things. This approach makes these interactions feel too clean and simple to be believable. However, it also means that this novel retains an overall lighthearted feeling that makes for easy reading, suitable for romantic comedies and beach reads. It may not be perfect, but Kate’s journey is an excellent reminder that though “the past is always part of us […] you can’t let it define you.”
Readers looking for a humorous romance colored with nostalgia and summer magic will find it all in Katie Walsh’s FOLLOW YOU DOWN.
