IR Rating:
3.6
Author E.K. Mercer’s FIVE HOURS delivers a focused and immersive narrative, though its occasional pacing inconsistencies and reliance on heightened description affect its momentum.
In this sci-fi thriller, a small group of characters have a short amount of time to fix a technological disaster that's significantly affecting everyone's minds and behavior.

E.K. Mercer’s FIVE HOURS is a science-fiction thriller about Arcon and a small group of connected characters trying to make sense of a technological crisis involving a network that begins altering memory, perception, and emotional connection. The story unfolds over just five hours, so the pressure builds quickly. Rather than fully explaining what’s happening, the narrative follows how the characters react as the situation becomes more frightening and unstable.

The writing is usually straightforward and easy to follow, especially during the faster-moving sections. At times, though, the prose becomes heavier and occasionally repetitive, particularly when Mercer leans into the characters’ emotional distress or psychological confusion. This comes through in descriptions like “a jagged, electric vibration that tore through the remnants of a consciousness,” where the language becomes much more intense and layered. While these moments add to the book’s unsettling atmosphere, they also slow the pacing in places that might have worked better with a lighter touch. The contrast between the cleaner action-driven scenes and the denser passages becomes more noticeable as the crisis escalates.

The five-hour setup helps keep the story moving quickly for most of the novel. As the situation gets worse, the distrust between characters creates more conflict and tension through the middle sections. Later on, the narrative slows in places where the focus shifts away from the immediate circumstances and toward longer moments of reflection. A few sections last longer than they need to, especially once the story begins shifting away from the immediacy of the crisis itself.

FIVE HOURS spends less time on detailed backstory and more time showing how the characters react as the predicament worsens. Fear, confusion, and instability drive many of their decisions once things start spiraling—which results in shifting character dynamics that help maintain the reader's interest. This keeps the story moving as alliances continue to change under pressure, even if a few of the emotional moments don’t land as strongly as they could.

Overall, FIVE HOURS is at its strongest when fear and distrust appear to be reshaping everybody's relationships, showing how disasters in fiction are only as interesting as the characters' responses to them.

Author E.K. Mercer’s FIVE HOURS delivers a focused and immersive narrative, though its occasional pacing inconsistencies and reliance on heightened description affect its momentum.
