In the self-help book, EMBRACING THE LAW OF ATTRACTION, author J.M. Jones wades in the shallows as she reframes an old principle by marrying its New Age-y aspects to tenets of biblical Christianity, but the overriding theme of positivity is undeniably uplifting.
EMBRACING THE LAW OF ATTRACTION by J.M. Jones offers biblical guidance for harnessing the power of the universe to manifest desires and accumulate God's blessings.

If you think it, it will come – that’s the simplified essence of EMBRACING THE LAW OF ATTRACTION by J.M. Jones. The concept called “law of attraction” is hardly a novel idea. Eons before Rhonda Byrne’s “The Secret” made the term part of the modern lexicon, the New Thought movement of the early 1800s introduced thought as a springboard to manifestation. While various philosophical groups, religious denominations and sects have long embraced the notion that the mind can, independent of action, create reality, the biblical spin seems a relatively recent development of which this book is an offshoot.

Considering the historic, syncretic background of creative visualization-made-manifest, the truth of the matter is somewhat more complicated. But those origins are never addressed here – a curious omission that gives this read a lightweight feel. The author begins by acknowledging the law of attraction as an old “secret” recently reintroduced, then points to quantum physics as the science behind it. This raises questions and begs more exploration. Instead, there is an abdication of writerly duty to dig deeper, and the reader is nudged to look to the internet for more on the topic.

The author takes a much more comprehensive dive into biblical support for the notion that receiving God’s blessings requires asking for them. Several bible passages are presented to shore up this assertion. There are also references to the likes of Marianne Williamson, Tony Robbins, Norman Vincent Peale, Buddha and others, which may give the book’s more fundamental-leaning Christian readers some pause. To offset misgivings, the author strives to link the New Agey-pseudoscience aspects of law of attraction with Christianity in a way intended to be logical and seamless. The level to which this succeeds lies in the mind of the beholder and will likely be judged according to their particular belief system. The pounding message, however, is to keep it positive as the universe is constantly at work ensuring that like attracts like. And about those negative thoughts? Good heavens, you’re asking for trouble of all sorts (sickness, loss, disappointment), so just don’t go there. Depressed persons might be even more depressed to learn they are likely suffering from a failure to control their thoughts rather a chemical imbalance in the brain. The author also claims (without citation) that the U.S. has more diagnosed cases of depression than any other country, another misleading statement (Ukraine remains the global leader, according to WHO) that flies in the face of current research.

Throughout, the author underscores the more “fun” elements of life and fills the back of the book with exercises and affirmations designed to bring clarity, abundance and happiness. Want a more compatible partner? Think on it. Want more financial freedom? Envision it. Want a new job? Ask. Believe. Receive. Journal your desires, visualize your dreams, list your expectations, then sit back and get your blessings. Foolhardy? Maybe. Futile? Probably. But in this time of rogue viruses, social upheaval and political strife, it’s a strategy that a lot of readers are bound to find irresistible and comforting.

In the self-help book, EMBRACING THE LAW OF ATTRACTION, author J.M. Jones wades in the shallows as she reframes an old principle by marrying its New Age-y aspects to tenets of biblical Christianity, but the overriding theme of positivity is undeniably uplifting.
