A MODERN GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED by Leon I. Sones M.D. offers a respectful homage to the Maimonides 12th Century self-help masterpiece that goes by similar title.

On the whole, A MODERN GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED by Leon I. Sones M.D. is a breath of fresh air. Encircling theories formed over a professional lifetime in the fields of health, mental health, and psychiatry, along with tales from challenges within his own life, the author posits that many neurotic problems appear in generation after generation within families. Therefore, in his opinion, each person should consider themselves responsible to get as free of neurosis as humanly possible throughout their lifetime, rather than continuing to pass down versions of the same or similar disturbing emotional/ psychological issues. Considering how difficulties with mental heath are epidemically on the rise, this would seem a very worthwhile societal call to arms and personal goal for individuals to aspire towards since, according to Sones, no one ever had a perfect childhood and everyone’s got some amount of “screwed up” programming to untangle. So humans in general have their work cut out for them.

Chock full of thoughts along with case examples regarding social anxiety disorders, psychosomatic issues, abuse, dealing with guilt, inferiority complexes, extra-marital relationships, death, lying, money, interpersonal squabbling/conflict, unhealthy parenting, neglect, etc., this non-fiction volume also contains no-nonsense essays offering outlooks on topics such as the meaning of life and the continued pervasiveness war (which is defined as a NCCN — Nice Clear-Cut Neurosis). Why is civilization continuing to create, stockpile, and utilize means of ever-increasing harm, rather than focusing society’s many resources upon bettering conditions for life on the planet overall?

There are a few flaws to this otherwise stellar work, such as unnecessary repetition of stories. While the habit is framed with a disclaimer up front declaring some tales are offered more than once because the author thinks them extra important, repeating stories almost verbatim from one appearance to the next feels extraneous and only serves to bog down the pace. A better approach would be to more briefly remind readers of a previously told tale and then go on to delve deeper into it, expounding upon why it’s important, rather than relating almost the exact same details again. Additionally, a hyperlinked Table of Contents for ease of navigation would be useful.
