“I’m honored that ‘Behind Bulletproof Glass’ won in the Women’s Issues (Non-Fiction) category of the 2025 IndieReader Discovery Awards. This memoir shares my deeply personal journey—from the joy of a positive pregnancy test to the heartbreak of a termination for medical reasons (TFMR). Writing it during the first Trump administration, when women’s healthcare faced relentless challenges, made the story feel even more urgent and meaningful. Thank you for recognizing my story.”
What is the name of the book and when was it published?
Behind Bulletproof Glass: My Story About Prenatal Testing and Abortion in the United States was published in September 2024.
What’s the book’s first line?
I woke up with a knot in my stomach.
What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.
This memoir shares my deeply personal journey—from the joy of a positive pregnancy test to the heartbreak of a termination for medical reasons (TFMR). The events unfold during the first Trump administration, when women’s healthcare faced relentless challenges.
What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?
I wrote this book to process my feelings when I went through termination for medical reasons. I felt so alone during that time, and I hope my book can help others in the same situation feel less alone. We also need to talk more about abortions, no matter the reason, and I hope my book can help to destigmatize the topic.
What’s the most distinctive thing about the main character? Who-real or fictional-would you say the character reminds you of?
The book is a memoir, so me.
What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?
To get a better understanding of terminations for medical reasons.
If they made your book into a movie, who would you like to see play the main character(s)?
I’d like to see Emily Blunt play the main character, and her husband John Krasinski to play the husband.
Is there something in particular that motivates you (fame? fortune?)
Processing my feelings: my best writing happens when I have strong feelings about something. The words almost write themselves when I’m sad or mad. Then I edit when I’ve calmed down.
Which writer, living or dead, do you most admire?
Fredrik Backman.
Which book do you wish you could have written?
Anne of Green Gables.
