IR Approved Author David M. Olsen Tells All About His Book

The Dark Waves of Winter received a 4+ star review, making it an IndieReader Approved title.

Following find an interview with author David M. Olsen.

What is the name of the book and when was it published?

The book is called The Dark Waves of Winter, published 1/13/2023.

What’s the book’s first line?

“Did you see them?” I said, staring into the cracked screen of my iPhone.

What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.

The Dark Waves of Winter is a follow up to the critically acclaimed anthology, The Silver Waves of Summer (Kelp Books, 2021). In this installment, the beach again takes center stage in stories from some of the biggest names in literary and noir fiction. From Edgar and Shamus award winners, to a Mystery Writers of America Grand Master, the sun-bleached noir in these pages features old school legends, alongside the brightest emerging writers in the game.

What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?

This book is an anthology and in a special genre of fiction we refer to as “surf noir.” It is inspired by our love of the ocean, beaches, and good literary/crime writing.

What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?

I think people looking for really great writing with a fresh twist on crime and noir genres will really enjoy this book. It pairs literary legends with emerging writers, which is also fun because people get to discover all of these great voices, new and old.

What’s the most distinctive thing about the main character?  Who-real or fictional-would you say the character reminds you of?

There are several main characters, but what I can say is that these stories all take place at, or near, the beach. It is the common denominator.

What do you do for work when you’re not writing?

When not writing and publishing great fiction, poetry, and essays, I own and operate an insurance brokerage.

Is there something in particular that motivates you (fame? fortune?)

The thing that truly motivates me is the fact that the room for improvement in the art of creating fiction is endless. I can, and will, spend the rest of my life dedicated to improving my skills.
