Advice from IR Approved Author Boshra Rasti: “Goals, Motivations, Conflicts. Every character, every scene, needs to expound on these three things.”

Surrogate Colony received a 4+ star review, making it an IndieReader Approved title.

Following find an interview with author Boshra Rasti.

What is the name of the book and when was it published?

Surrogate Colony, Published December 18th, 2021 (Audiobook published January 31st, 2022)

What’s the book’s first line?

“Crouching down, I fish the book from under my bed, Successful Relationships.”

What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.

An eighteen-year-old against the algorithms; will those behind the algorithms get her before it’s too late?

What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?

The novel’s dedication is: “to every innocent questioner, to every faultless outcast”, so people who are on the fringes, people who do not fit in, were the inspiration for the novel.

What’s the main reason someone should read this book?

I think people need stories and in particular cautionary tales. We need to know where to draw the moral line in the sand; we need to know what could happen if we collectively take certain steps.  This novel deals with the aftermath of a pandemic and systematic choices taken against a threat. It deals with the moral grey area with algorithms and technology. Especially now, we need to see how concepts such as ‘safety’ or ‘health’ can be hijacked by ulterior motives.

What’s the most distinctive thing about the main character?  Who-real or fictional-would you say the character reminds you of?

Adriana is an odd one, an underdog, but she’s super smart.  She is also persistent and patient. I admire women who are strong like that. I can resonate with a time in my life when I felt I’d never amount to anything. That I would never fit in, so Adriana is the sort of person I wish I was when I was 18.

What do you do for work when you’re not writing?

I like to run and walk. If running is too painful then I walk. I also really love mindfulness meditation, so I often sit and just breathe. I wish I could say I was into photography or art, or music, but I am terrible at proportions and can’t keep a tune!

What’s a great piece of advice that you can share with fellow indie authors?

Goals, Motivations, Conflicts. Every character, every scene, needs to expound on these three things. Otherwise, you have a one-dimensional character going through a story with no backbone.
