Gail McHugh’s Steamy Romances “Collide” and “Pulse”

Gail McHugh’s steamy romance duo Collide and Pulse both got a major makeover when they made the transition from indie to traditionally published.

collideThe story follows grieving college grad named Emily Cooper, who starts a new life in New York City with her boyfriend, Dillon, after his mother’s death. But then she meets a playboy, Gavin, who not only turns her head, but won’t stay out of it either. But Gavin isn’t exactly perfect – and before long his flaws begin to show. In its follow-up, Pulse, Emily is reeling from a broken heart and running towards the man she loves, hoping he’ll take her back. The only question is – will a new love blossom from their reunion, or will old wounds be ripped open once again?

Both books have become New York Times bestsellers and a Publishers Weekly top romance pick. McHugh is a married mother of three and a chocoholic, according to her bio.

Collide (new)Before being nabbed up by Atria Books in September 2013, Collide was self-published earlier that year. Its original cover is far more steamy than the revamped version.  It features an amorous couple in bed – the woman clad only in black underwear and the gentleman shirtless – in warm, sensual tones of flesh, rose, pink and black.

But the new cover is a sleek black and white, and no one is unclothed. Instead, it features a hunky man sporting a crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, seated invitingly and flashing an expensive watch. Against this sophisticated and simple design, the title stands out in bright maroon.

pulseThe changes between the first edition of Pulse and its second are similar.

The self-published version is also steamy – another couple in bed, the girl clad only in panties while she tugs on her lover’s tie. Again, the color palette is warm and sensual.

And the revamp by Atra is similarly sleek – a black white design with the title in bright blue. This time, the leading man is joined by his lady love, this one also tugging on his tie.

Which covers do you have in your collection?
