Matt Ingwalson’s latest novel, the futuristic satire THE NIHILISTICATS is a wild ride. After a mass data breach resulting in every American’s information posted n the dark web, individuals have the chance to make a “New Start: new name, new gender identification, new racial affiliation, and a Social Security number and phone provided by the government. When Marcus “Can” Antile, a guy just trying to make it through the day and maybe go to bed with one or more of his neighbors, meets the beautiful Rebecca in a bar, his life is shaken. She uses a landline, pays with cash. Oh, and the government’s looking for her, putting Can in their sights. The piece is over-the-top fun, punctuated by a popular podcast in between the Can-centric chapters, dealing with everything from love to deepfake videos to faking out the fakers. Nothing is off limits, and the serious undertones are only supported by the wry tone and the comedy, satire, and irony of the plot and characters. Ingwalson is a master of making the reader laugh while pointing out the danger. THE NIHILISTICATS is fast, fun, furious, and observant, with a scalpel’s precision.
