The scientific method taught in grade school is usually regarded as the number one tried-and-true process for experimentation. But what if there was another way to explore the possibilities of a scientific discovery?
It’s an incredibly bold statement and the premise that author Paglierani asks his readers to consider; it is the first of many questions that are posed in the newest installment of his series (which also include Finding Personal Truth Book II: Unraveling Human Nature (Finding Personal Truth (in the too-much-information age… and Finding Personal Truth (in the too-much-information age) Book I: Solving the Mind Body Mystery).
Changing the landscape of the current scientific process is a lofty goal, one that could be met with scorn or dismissed altogether. However, Paglierani’s claims are backed up with years of research—he has dedicated his life to proving his new method, and the amount of work involved in this endeavor is on display throughout the book.
THE SCIENCE OF DISCOVERY introduces the idea of constellated science, the concept of using and recognizing patterns to form new conclusions, linking them together like stars in a constellation. The new method rivals the existing one by encouraging its users to continue asking questions instead of just trying to reach an answer. Paglierani poses the theory that seeking answers causes a more closed-minded approach. Implementing what he calls the Cartesian Process to gather facts and Logical Geometry to arrange facts into patterns, the steps of the method are exemplified in questions about sleep, deafness, weight loss, and cancer. Each section is carefully plotted and organized, branching out into both scientific and philosophical discussions.
There is a lot of information to grasp here. Some of it goes off into tangents that feel a little repetitive as the book goes on. Some of it is complex, maybe too much for those who aren’t scientifically or mathematically inclined. But Paglierani does a wonderful job of keeping most of the language casual—even humorous. His personal experiences and experiments add to the wealth of information complied in the book, enhancing the scientific method by putting it to work. A genuine love of science, as well as the encouragement of others to discover their inner scientist, is proudly shown. THE SCIENCE OF DISCOVERY provides a new angle to observe the world and implores everyone to never stop asking questions.
An insightful, meticulously researched look into the scientific process, THE SCIENCE OF DISCOVERY taps into the inherent human need to explore and learn beyond childhood.
