IR VERDICT:
GENERAL MEADE covers the American Civil War from the perspective of the titular Union commander. Packed with maps and recreated letters, author Robert Kofman’s has clearly done his research. The novel starts in the blood-soaked center of the war and presents Meade as a cautious family man caught in conflicts both on the battlefield and within the Union leadership. Meade is humanized by his frequent letters to his wife, but his world comes to life in the battle scenes.
