IR Rating:
3.1
FROM GRANDMA WITH LOVE is a perfect book for grandparents to gift their preschool grandchildren. The simple picture book presents positive affirmations for children to help them grow in confidence.
Preschooler Bella wonders how much her grandma loves her and asks a series of questions to find the answer.

The picture book FROM GRANDMA WITH LOVE features preschooler Bella and her grandmother. It was written by five year old Bella Neville Cruz and illustrated by Madeleine Mae B. Migallos. Though there is not much in terms of a story, what is presented is a charming sequence of questions where Bella seeks affirmation as to how much her grandmother cares for her. In the beginning Bella seems unsure if her grandmother would still love her if she did things like drinking all of the water or borrowing Grandma’s book. In the illustrations the young child is tearful and tentative. As the book progresses Bella’s questions become more assured and the pictures more joyful as she draws and jumps and hugs her grandmother. By the end she knows her grandma will always love her.

There is obviously a ready-made market for a book such as this and it makes a perfect gift for any grandparent to buy their preschool grandchild. The text is clear and precise and would make an excellent read along with enough opportunities for gentle prompting as to how much the reader might love their own child or grandchild. The illustrations are simple with more than a hint of the big-eyed children’s manga style first introduced by Japanese animator Osamu Tezuka in the 1940s. They contain very little in the way of background, focusing instead on the two main characters in action framed within a pastel tinted circle. Perhaps including a few extra details in the illustrations may have helped in starting conversations about different objects within the images. As it is, the pictures function to illustrate the text without really breathing any extra life in to the words.

In the short biography of the writer, photographed with her mother who helped with the book, it states that Bella speaks both English and Spanish but aside from the translation of the words for grandma and mom in the dedication, the book is written only in English. However, the Spanish edition (which is also available) gives non-bilingual early learners an opportunity to pick up their first words in Spanish or English.

FROM GRANDMA WITH LOVE is a perfect book for grandparents to gift their preschool grandchildren. It presents positive affirmations for children to help them grow in confidence.
