In CASTLE FORKS, Chris Cochrane’s fantasy adventure novel, a young protagonist (who happens to share the author’s name) finds himself thrust into a hidden world of magic, intrigue, and danger. When Chris and his father stumble upon the titular Castle Forks during a hunting trip, they are drawn into an ancient conflict between the angelic Caretakers and the demonic Tourlt, with the fate of humanity hanging in the balance.
CASTLE FORKS bears inevitable comparisons to C.S. Lewis’s classic Chronicles of Narnia series, with its premise of an ordinary child discovering a portal to a magical realm. But where the Pevensie children are transported to the land of Narnia, Cochrane’s Castle Forks exists alongside—and hidden within—the mundane world, recalling the wizarding world of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books. Like his literary forebears, Cochrane imbues his fantasy with a richly imagined history and mythology
Cochrane’s prose is assured and his plotting brisk, with a narrative that bounces between Chris’s initiation into the world of Castle Forks and his ancestors’ exploits in ages past. The novel’s most compelling sequences are its vividly described action set pieces, which crackle with energy: “Chris jumped and stabbed the mauling wolf in the side. The beast released its grip on Chris’s left arm for a few moments and howled with pain, allowing enough time for Chris to act again.”
Another one of CASTLE FORKS’ strengths is its likable and relatable young protagonist, Chris Cochrane. Chris is an ordinary kid thrust into extraordinary circumstances, and his emotional journey forms the heart of the story. The author does a commendable job portraying Chris’s initial trepidation and fear as he navigates the strange new world of Castle Forks. As Chris begins to find his courage, one can’t help but root for him.
The supporting characters are also well-drawn and appealing. Chris’s father Todd is a stalwart and comforting presence, while his brother Justin provides welcome levity and humor. The Caretakers, like the kindly Novell and brave Si, are noble figures who consistently try to guide and encourage Chris.
CASTLE FORKS is at its best when fully immersed in its fantasy world, where Cochrane’s imagination and storytelling prowess shine. Still, its appealing characters and rip-roaring action sequences make for an engaging and entertaining read.
CASTLE FORKS boasts a vividly imagined world and thrilling action. Readers will find much to enjoy in Chris Cochrane’s magical realm hidden within the mundane.
