A HIGHER STANDARD is a witty, playful romance novel with a refreshingly modern spin. Author E.F. Dodd does a fantastic job of bringing her characters to life and making readers care about their struggles and triumphs. The story follows two successful professionals, Everest and Gideon, who have dedicated their lives to their careers. Everest runs a horse rescue and rehabilitation center, which she views more as a calling than a career. In contrast, Gideon is a land developer, excited by the process of seeing a plan come to life. Gideon visits Everest’s hometown on the heel of a new business deal. He quickly learns Everest will play a prominent role in the success of his plans. At first, Gideon and Everest’s career ambitions and values seem pitted against each other. However, their irresistible pull on one another leads them to set aside their judgments and get to know each other more intimately, even if one may have ulterior motives. What follows is a charming, humorous, and spicy romance never disillusioned by the limits of love in the presence of responsibility and social politics.

While the relationship between Everest and Gideon is full of delightful banter and excellent dialogue, their early interactions feel uncharacteristically cringy. Everest is introduced to the reader as a no-nonsense baddy, yet she surprisingly lets Gideon get away with making some questionable advancements early on. Consent is sexy, and Gideon’s initial lack of boundaries, both verbally and physically, wasn’t it. Seeing Everest shut down that frat-boy “charm” would have been incredible as a strong female lead. Dodd does an excellent job of exploring the themes of work-life balance, dedication, and love while infusing the story with everything a reader could want in a hot and steamy romance. The chemistry between Everest and Gideon is palpable, and their journey to finding love is both realistic and satisfying. Additionally, the suthor skillfully utilizes narrative shifts to give the reader insight into both Everest and Gideon’s perspectives. The alternate point of view creates a captivating read and solid character development.

E.F. Dodd’s A HIGHER STANDARD is a well-written and engaging romantic tale that will satisfy readers with its modern setting, tantalizing interactions, and heart-warming ending.
