In 2165 HILLSIDE, author Tobias Maxwell tackles subject matters that many readers may find uncomfortable—subjects related to the morally unacceptable side of society that most people fear. What makes this book compelling is that he doesn’t use the dark subject matter merely for shock and awe. Instead, he creates meaning from it by evoking strong emotional reactions that amplify the ramifications of the dark deeds. In this story, even some of the dark characters are worthy of compassion. Maxwell’s ability to carry this off is commendable.
The reader/character connection achieved in the narrative is a tribute to masterful storytelling and Maxwell does an admirable job weaving together a network of extremely complex elements into a well-written, well-structured tale. Each subplot has meaning and enriches the story without losing the main plot and theme. The manner in which the scenes are organized, the change in POV with multiple narrators, and the pacing work well together to make a complicated story straightforward — a skill in which Tobias Maxwell excels.
Author Tobias Maxwell demonstrates a profound understanding of human emotions, motivations, and psychology as he tells a moralistic tale stemming from the depths of the dark side of humanity in 2165 HILLSIDE.
