Set in rural Ukraine, THE WOMAN BEHIND THE WATERFALL, entails three generations of women striving to deal with the spiritual fallout of an unwanted pregnancy. Rich and poetic in detail, it is an often dreamy, oneiric narrative rooted in an exaltation of nature. It asks a lot of the reader, but gives back more. A lovely novel.
