Following find an interview with author Kim Chinquee.
What is the name of the book and when was it published?
Pipette, October 31, 2022
What’s the book’s first line?
“At the ballet, a man carries with grace his ballerina.”
What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.
A woman leaving a threatening situation, then living in isolation with the threat of the pandemic. With leitmotifs of skiing, dogs, trains, waterways, birds, nature, spiritual guides, triathlons, she writes, she teaches, she swims/bikes/runs. The novel dips into her past―trauma, relationships, activities, working in the lab―which pendulums, then finally propels forward.”
What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?
On January 1, 2020, I began a challenge in the writing group I host, to write a flash fiction a day. Then the pandemic hit. And the pieces became linked and it turned into a novel revolving around the pandemic.
What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?
It’s a great study on form and resilience.
What’s the most distinctive thing about the main character? Who-real or fictional-would you say the character reminds you of?
She’s strong: a mom, an athlete, a teacher, a survivor. I’d like to see her as a superhero, but that might be stretching it.
When did you first decide to become an author?
After leaving the Air Force and going back to college and taking a creative writing class.
Is this the first book you’ve written?
No, this is my eighth.
What do you do for work when you’re not writing?
English Professor.
How much time do you generally spend on your writing?
Depends where I am in the process. Typically 2-8 hours.
What’s the best and the hardest part of being an indie?
Promoting the work is a challenge. The freedom of working closely with my publisher is a plus!
What’s a great piece of advice that you can share with fellow indie authors?
Support fellow indie writers.
Would you go traditional if a publisher came calling? If so, why?
Sure. I’m open to anything.
Is there something in particular that motivates you (fame? fortune?)
Being a keen observer of life and being able to write about it.
