Sharon Winters’ KARL’S DIARY is subtitled “It’s a Dog’s Life,” and yes, that is in fact pretty much what this book is about. It is seemingly written for those who really need a break from the chaos and stress of human existence, those who enjoy searching out cute videos and pictures of animals on the Internet, and/or delight in the companionship of dogs of their own (or would if they could). It is a warm, sweet look at a dog’s life from the dog’s own perspective, expressing joy in walks, cuddles and play sessions, fear of the vet, affection for favored dog playmates and human “uncles” and “aunts,” and preferences in squeaky toys and snacks.
The dog’s perspective is given with affectionate humor and gentleness, the perspective of a creature who knows himself loved and loves deeply and unconditionally in return. There’s not much of a plot here, to be honest- it’s the normal everyday ups and downs of a dog’s life, no dark secrets or mysteries to uncover, no dramatic revelations or family upsets. The reader who fears stories of animal abuse and trauma need not worry here – Karl is thoroughly spoiled and loved, as all dogs should be, and the worst hardship he suffers in his life is having to watch Daddy eat whipped cream when he himself is not allowed to have any. As with most dogs, food is a major focus of Karl’s attention, and it is amusing to watch his parents plead with Uncle Marty not to give him too many treats while dog-sitting, while they themselves ply him with human food like steak, provolone cheese, and various fruits and vegetables.
Readers learn about Karl’s adorable girlfriend, Chloe (and his attempts to impress her by jumping into a pool with the cover still on), his games of chase with his humans’ granddaughter Leilani, and his happiness at being snuggled in his parents’ arms. Even Karl’s death is handled gently and kindly (though rather suddenly), a passage from one life to another rather than a brutal ending or a tragic loss. And after Karl passes, we’re introduced to Charley, a lonely dog who badly needed a home, and was sent two loving human parents by Karl’s spirit – so even death brings joy and warmth where they are most needed. It’s not the most eventful of lives, but there are times when it’s just nice to take a break from being human and take a look at the world through the eyes of a much-loved pet dog. This is a book for those times.
A look at the life of a dog through the dog’s own eyes, Sharon Winters’ KARL’S DIARY offers the reader a dose of gentle warmth and unconditional affection.
