The shocking death of a chemotherapy patient by accidental overdose at the Bateman Cancer Center triggers an internal enquiry. When Professor Brad Parker is drafted in to assist on the panel investigating suspected malpractice, he immediately becomes suspicious that something is being covered up. When both of the doctors under investigation are found dead, with one of the crime scenes staged to look like a suicide, he is certain that something is very wrong indeed. Parker and his life-partner, FBI agent Karen Richmond, set out to unravel the case. What they discover is institutional corruption and a sex trafficking ring with very high profile clients.
PERILOUS OBSESSION is the fifth novel in Geoffrey M Cooper’s popular Brad Parker and Karen Richmond series and it provides all of the plot twists and high caliber action that regular readers will have come to expect. With his background as a cancer researcher and scientific administrator, Cooper is well qualified to ensure the accuracy of his subject matter and the details he provides about the inside workings of medical institutions lend credibility to a plot that, in less capable hands, may appear a little far fetched. Although Cooper is no great prose stylist, his writing is functional and direct, he knows how to tell a good story and hook a reader right from the first paragraph. And while the civilian Professor Parker’s ability to seemingly waltz in and out of an FBI operation unquestioned is not exactly credible, it never gives pause or stops the proceedings. With a cast of increasingly dubious characters, PERILOUS OBSESSION casts a light on corruption and sexual depravity with Parker and Richmond once again facing down the evils of the world.
With PERILOUS OBSESSION, Cooper has created another enthralling medical thriller, which also serves as a vehicle for the continued story of his two leads. Though the novel works as a stand-alone entry point to the series, those who have followed Parker and Richmond from the very beginning may get the most from the book and will particularly enjoy the way their relationship has evolved by the close.
The fifth book in the Professor Brad Parker and FBI agent Karen Richmond series, PERILOUS OBSESSION is a gripping medical mystery. With his scientific background, Geoffrey M. Cooper writes with authority and authenticity blending thrilling action with medical intrigue.
