Following find an interview with author Brian J. Robinson.
What is the name of the book and when was it published?
The title is Adderall Blues. It was published on July 31st by Indie Publisher, Koehler Books.
What’s the book’s first line?
“It occurred to be today like a spontaneous lightning bolt of neuro-stimulative ambition, that it was time to write my book.”
What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.
It’s a passionate memoir that provides shocking access to the inner workings of the misunderstood ADHD mind. There aren’t a lot of first person, non-clinical accounts of ADHD, and certainly none that is as entertaining as this one…
What inspired you to write the book?A particular person? An event?
I’d like to think that it was me that inspired me to write the book, but it very could have been my brain that decided on it’s own. It depends on one’s view of mind brain dualism. Looking deeper I suppose I often felt misunderstood, and that my true intentions were not being perceived by others. It was that, and my understanding that people with ADHD, like me, were being undervalued in the educational system and in life. People with ADHD happen to be very creative and passionate individuals. Unfortunately, when they look at themselves in society’s mirror, it is mostly their inability to conform properly in social and educational settings. By the time they are in the real world, their inner talents are muted by poor self-esteem. I wanted to empower people with ADHD, and show them why being unique is among the greatest of qualities to possess.
What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?
First person perspectives are important. Science and knowledge is not static. The status-quo with regard to a multitude of topics is ever changing. What is regarded as fact at one point, may be later debunked as anachronistic. Meanwhile, someone who lives through a first-person perspective has a more timeless view on themselves and their experiences. This is especially true if you refuse to take common knowledge of the time at face value. Adderall Blues questions everything we think we know about ADHD, and it all happens from authentic subjectivity.
If they made your book into a movie, who would you like to see play the main character(s)?
Ryan Gosling. People say we look alike…
When did you first decide to become an author?
When I sat down and couldn’t stop writing. It was pretty evident by the time I wrote 50 pages of a book I had no intention of writing.
Which writer, living or dead, do you most admire?
Phillip K. Dick is one of my heroes. His ability to create psychic worlds marinated in philosophic futurism always astounded and spoke to me. He is one of those writers that strikes me as tapped into the ether somehow.
