What’s the book’s first line?
Canopus, Egypt, September, 38 CE
Big as a fist, the stone came flying through the window.
What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.
In the year 38, life in Alexandria was dangerous if you were Jewish. The arbitrary rule of the emperor Caligula also made it a time of shifting alliances for his Greek and Egyptian subjects. Peppery Winds takes you into that exotic, faraway world, in a tale of politics, pirates and yes, pepper – a precious commodity whose import route was jealously guarded by Arab traders.
The first half of the book sets the scene in which Alexandrian Jews appeal to the emperor to maintain peace in the city. Unforseen circumstances lead to the second part, wherein two young adventurers and unlikely comrades – Amram, a young Judean, and Aristides, a Greek spice merchant – travel into the unknown to break the pepper monopoly, and discover a world totally unlike their own. But their assignment is fraught with danger: three murders have already been committed in order to preserve the secret of the newly discovered open sea passage. Woven into this carefully researched tale of intrigue, love, adventure and revenge, is also a depiction of early Jewish and Greek settlements in India
What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?
Love of adventure. And my wife, who encouraged me to put my experiences into writing.
What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?
Entertainment. And interest in the Roman world, Jewish history and their intersect with early India.
