Bob Klosterman on “The Four Horseman of the Investor’s Apocalypse”

What is the name of the book and when was it published?

The Four Horsemen of the Investor’s Apocalypse was published in January of 2015

What’s the book’s first line?

The challenge for today’s investors is to create strategies that fight off the “four evils” that prevent them from achieving and, more importantly, preserving wealth over time.

What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.

There are four forces that work against investors in their pursuit of long-term financial security. These forces, identified as the four horsemen, are inflation, volatility, group think and global disruptions and dislocations. The book digs into the impact of the four horsemen on portfolios and provides strategies to mitigate the impact that they bring.

What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?

The truth is that my brother-in-law, who happens to be a Catholic priest, kept saying “Bob, you have a book in you”. He had a book published and egged me on for a while. During my consideration I felt there was something to offer and add value to peoples lives. I felt it needed to focus attention on the primary issues investor’s struggle with and I had 40 years of examples of things that went wrong and solutions to those challenges.

What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?

Of course, someone who want to improve his or her investment strategies will receive value. There are three types of people who will benefit from the book.

1. People who want to manage their own portfolio and would like some structure and general direction. The book provides a solid footing to move forward.

2. Those who have an advisor but want to have a better sense of the advisor’s recommendations and whether they are appropriate.

3. Those seeking an advisor to work with. The book provides a way to assess not only the advisor advice but the work they do.
