Following find an interview with author Houston Howard.

What is the name of the book and when was it published?

The Spark at the Center of the Universe was published on September 11, 2024. This captivating story marks the debut of the Global Galactics series, a collection of books aimed at reigniting a sense of awe and wonder in children while fostering their imagination and connection to the universe.

What’s the book’s first line?

“My name is Sparky. I travel all around the galaxy, making new friends and having the most galac-tastic adventures.” This line sets the tone for Sparky’s adventurous journey, immediately drawing young readers into a world of cosmic wonder.

What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”

Join Sparky, the adventurous star-traveling pup, in The Spark at the Center of the Universe, a beautifully illustrated tale that reminds children every creature—no matter how big or small—has a unique and essential role in the universe. As the first book in the Global Galactics series, it lays the foundation for stories filled with awe-inspiring adventures that aim to inspire kids to dream big, think deeply, and see their potential to make a difference.

What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?

Global Galactics was inspired by the real-life adventures of Timothy and Karinna Karsten and their dog, Sparky, who traveled across 22 countries and the U.S. These journeys illuminated a global need for stories that rekindle children’s sense of connection—with themselves, their communities, and the Earth. By weaving these experiences into an imaginative narrative, the story also seeks to spark curiosity about the wonders of the cosmos.

What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?

The Spark at the Center of the Universe offers an entertaining and inspiring adventure that not only captivates children but also instills confidence, leadership, and environmental awareness. It’s more than a story—it’s an invitation for kids to discover their role in shaping the world and to imagine their part in the grand tapestry of the universe.

What’s the most distinctive thing about the main character? Who—real or fictional—would you say the character reminds you of?

Sparky, the galactic dog, is defined by his adventurous spirit, boundless curiosity, and an innate ability to inspire others. He embodies the wonder of The Little Prince combined with the boldness of explorers like Amelia Earhart. Think of Sparky as a modern Snoopy of the stars, charming children and teaching them to approach life with a sense of awe and endless possibility.

When did you first decide to become an author?

The idea for Global Galactics took root while witnessing the transformative power of stories on children’s understanding of the world. The desire to create narratives that inspire awe, wonder, and a sense of purpose in kids led to the creation of The Spark at the Center of the Universe.

Is this the first book you’ve written?

Yes, it’s the first book in the Global Galactics series, which promises many more awe-inspiring adventures for young readers.

What do you do for work when you’re not writing?

We dedicate ourselves to creating educational and entertaining experiences for children through Global Galactics. This includes crafting picture books, early reader chapter books, music, and podcasts—all designed to inspire awe in kids, and to explore, imagine, and connect with their world and beyond.

How much time do you generally spend on your writing?

The team devotes hours each week to writing and developing Global Galactics content. Every detail is crafted to ensure each story sparks curiosity, inspires awe, and leaves a lasting impact.

What’s the best and the hardest part of being an indie?

The best part of being indie is the creative freedom to bring Global Galactics to life as envisioned—stories that are both imaginative and educational. The hardest part is ensuring the brand reaches children everywhere, inspiring them to see the beauty and responsibility they have in their world.

What’s a great piece of advice that you can share with fellow indie authors?

Tell the story that only you can tell. Trust in your unique vision, and remember: the most meaningful stories are the ones that inspire and resonate deeply with your audience.

Would you go traditional if a publisher came calling? If so, why?

If a publisher aligned with Global Galactics’ mission to inspire awe, wonder, and leadership in children, we would consider it. Expanding the reach of these stories is always the ultimate goal.

Is there something in particular that motivates you (fame? fortune?)

Our motivation lies in inspiring the next generation to dream big, embrace leadership, and serve as stewards of the Earth—all while expanding their understanding of the cosmos. It’s about creating stories that nurture children’s imaginations and help them see their potential in the universe.
