IR Approved Author A.R. Kingston: “There are things about the traditional publishing industry I dislike and it’s also more fun to try and make it on your own.”

Autumn Falls received a 4+ star review, making it an IndieReader Approved title.

Following find an interview with author A.R. Kingston.

What is the name of the book and when was it published?

Autumn Falls, published March 14th, 2021

What’s the book’s first line?

Tendrils of fog snaked across the small island, choking out the visibility in its slowly congealing mist. Stopping at the edge of a small field, a man glanced up to observe the halos of streetlamps distorting in the milky vapor.

What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.

A young mother moves to a small fog-locked island off the coast of Maine where twenty-five years ago a deal was made, one which she was a part of. Now, she will have to uncover her family’s secret if she wants to survive.

What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?

It all started with an incredibly vivid nightmare that stuck with me long after I woke up. I didn’t want to waste such a wonderful story that my brain had given me, so I set out to in my attempt to write my first horror book.

What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?

If you want a nice creep factor without the overwhelming gore and maybe even a bit of a mystery, then this book is for you.

What’s the most distinctive thing about the main character?  Who-real or fictional-would you say the character reminds you of?

She is a single mother and a paramedic. I haven’t read horror books with paramedics in them, so I think that makes her stand out a bit. I can’t say who she reminds me of since she is entirely original, but I think a lot of mothers could relate to her protective instincts.

Is this the first book you’ve written?

No. This is the first horror book I’ve written, but I have several dark fantasy books/paranormal romances under my belt.

How much time do you generally spend on your writing?

I like to dedicate at least 6 hours a day to either writing, editing, marketing, or anything else that my books may need. I do take the weekends off to be with my kids and to volunteer at my favorite pig rescue.

Would you go traditional if a publisher came calling?  If so, why?

I think I would have to decline. On one hand, I admit it would be nice to say you are with Random House or one of the other big five. It would also be great to see your book on the shelves of Barnes and Noble and to get the full support of the publisher’s editing team. But there is a reason I decided to become an indie author instead of seeking literary agents. Truth be told, there are things about the traditional publishing industry I dislike and it’s also more fun to try and make it on your own.

Is there something in particular that motivates you (fame? fortune?)

I just want to leave a small mark on the world. Even if I don’t become famous, my books will linger and maybe someday someone will pick one up and fall in love with me, and at the end of the day, being remembered is important.
