Advice from IR Approved Author (and psychotherapist) Carolyn Geduld: “Think of writer’s block as being caused by hidden internal conflict…”

Take Me Out The Back received a 4+ star review, making it an IndieReader Approved title.

Following find an interview with author Carolyn Geduld.

What is the name of the book and when was it published?

Take Me Out The Back. 8/27/2020

What’s the book’s first line?

“I promise you. I will never put you in a nursing home. No matter what.”

What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.

A mass shooting in a nursing home has ripple effects in a small university town in Indiana, immediately after and in the days, weeks, and months that follow. Many are affected, from the mayor to the staff to relatives of the victims to the deputy who shot the shooter. Will a copycat killer emerge from among them?

What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?

The shootings at Columbine, Parkland, and other schools and venues. I couldn’t bear to write about a school massacre, so I used a nursing home setting instead.

What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?

To better understand how public tragedy shatters individuals in a community by taking the reader inside the minds of those afflicted.

What’s the most distinctive thing about the main character?  Who-real or fictional-would you say the character reminds you of?

The shooter, under stress from work, his mother’s dementia, and his sister’s demands, comes unraveled and believes he is doing something noble. He resembles Normal Bates from Robert Bloch’s Psycho.

When did you first decide to become an author?

In my 20s, then after a 50 year hiatus, in 2018 when I was 76 years old.

Is this the first book you’ve written?

I wrote three books on the arts in my 20s. One of them, “Filmguide to 2001,” is still on Amazon. “Take Me Out The Back” is my debut novel.

What do you do for work when you’re not writing?

Psychotherapy. My degree is in clinical social work.

How much time do you generally spend on your writing?

Since I am (mostly) retired, I have the luxury of spending the entire day writing.

What’s a great piece of advice that you can share with fellow indie authors?

Think of writer’s block as being caused by hidden internal conflict, such as caused by fear of success, fear of exposure, or fear of rejection.
