EAGLES AND HAWKS AND ALSO PEOPLE AS WELL. November 7, 2017.
What’s the book’s first line?
The Cortland fans—for all their sports teams—had rituals.
What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.
Christian college baseball star Enzo Prinziatta’s life is on track for greatness—a promising career, an attractive girlfriend carrying his baby, and endorsements lined up for miles. But when a long-held secret is revealed about his idolized, late father—shaking the very foundation of his faith—how will Enzo prevent his life from going completely off the rails?
What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?
I was particularly curious about the issue of gravity of circumstances and locations. Why do some people never leave their hometown, while others become gypsies, freely roaming the Earth without a care? Is there a middle ground? What motivations drive both kinds of behaviors? I wanted to explore these kinds of things and the consequences of both kinds of choices.
On top of this was the main character’s crisis of faith, which was another area I desperately wanted to explore.
What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?
This is a difficult question because it almost insists on the author bragging on him/herself. For me, anyway, the book accomplished what I set out to do which was to explore certain themes (in addition to the ones listed in Question #4.) The reviews so far have been fairly positive, and that provides some hope that other readers may feel the same way that I do about it, to some degree.
What’s the most distinctive thing about the main character? Who-real or fictional-would you say the character reminds you of?
Kirkus Reviews said that the main character is “complex” and that was very gratifying to read because I did want to write him in a realistic way, and human beings do tend to be complex, at least on some level.
If they made your book into a movie, who would you like to see play the main character(s)?
If they made a movie from this novel, there is an actress named Patty Yu who would be perfect to play Trudy Booth, but any number of fine actors could probably play Enzo Prinziatta (the male main character.)
When did you first decide to become an author?
I’ve always loved to both read and write. My mom took me to the public library a lot as a kid, and so I think it all started there. Books have always been a major source of joy in my life.
Is this the first book you’ve written?
No, I’ve written and published several before this, and many others that will never see the light of day because they are horrible and shouldn’t be read by anyone.
What do you do for work when you’re not writing?
I’m a Risk Manager, which means I try to keep people out of trouble. Which is the opposite of what I try to do with my characters when writing.
What’s the best and the hardest part of being an indie?
Marketing/getting people to notice you in a media-saturated landscape.
Is there something in particular that motivates you?
It’d be very gratifying to discover even a small group of people who enjoyed my writing because it would mean we would share in a kinship of some kind with regard to aesthetics. I think that would be nice.
Which writer, living or dead, do you most admire?
Lorrie Moore.
