CHILDREN OF ANOTHER BIBLE

At the beginning of the human species, we were not alone. There were other lineages, most of which died out, but one, a line marked by red hair and adaptation to cold weather, was protected and cherished by the rogue angel Kulkuz. Now, the other angels and demons, offended by her presumption, seek to help humanity to gain complete victory and drive Kulkuz’s children to extinction, while she will do everything she can to protect them. The battle plays out in three different locations in time and space, with three very different protagonists – but what will be the fate of Kulkuz’s children?
CHILDREN OF ANOTHER BIBLE is in actuality a prologue plus a set of three stories, set in the modern era, a post-apocalyptic, less-“civilized” future, and an even more distant, more advanced future. Each of them is intriguing in its own right, with an entirely new setting, story, and protagonist, each well-developed and creatively designed. Good world-building and sound character development can be the making of a good book – in this case, it does so thrice over. The worlds here are cleverly created, with their own philosophical underpinnings, thought-provoking perspectives, and intelligent, three-dimensional characters a reader can empathize with and understand, however foreign the environment they may be immersed in.
The author wisely avoids a simplistic good-vs-evil struggle, giving us two sides which each have their own motivations and their own convictions, and are equally convinced that they are in the right. As the stories progress, the reader’s sympathies are drawn now to one side, now to another, as the complexities of the underlying struggle come to light and the main characters are recruited for one purpose or another. None of the stories, however, are fully resolved, or as completely woven together as they might be – hopefully, this indicates a sequel to come, which will more thoroughly tie the threads of the stories together and bring them to a stable conclusion. This is an absolutely fascinating beginning, and deserves a much more thorough explanation in further books.
CHILDREN OF ANOTHER BIBLE is an excellent start to what hopefully will be a series, which will carry through the creative and complex world-building and stage-setting begun here, in order to fully realize the story it begins.

IR VERDICT:
Jonathan Maas impressively ties three different eras together in CHILDREN OF ANOTHER BIBLE, a tale of an angel scorned at the beginning of time. Although revenge dominates this tale, Maas manages to include philosophical musings about how humans got here and where they go after they die without slowing down the pace.
