TO DIE A THOUSAND DEATHS is a triumph of contemporary science fiction writing, teeming with wry, clever prose and gripping from start to finish. Occasionally, age-old conventions of the thriller genre threaten to bog down an otherwise creative tale—the villain is a cartoonishly insane Eastern European, the military captain is pragmatic and physically flawless, and Timothy Dark, the protagonist himself, falls easily into the well-worn archetype of the curmudgeonly yet brilliant scientist—but author Hal Emerson saves what might have otherwise been hackneyed and stale, propelling readers through a fascinating series of events toward a thoughtful and rather philosophical conclusion, one that calls into question—as truly great science fiction does—those ideas most instrumental to our existence: what we are made of, and what it means to lose it all.
