JK Rowling Goes Indie, Casting “Fresh Spells in New Stories for Pottermore”

JK Rowling casts fresh spells in new stories for Pottermore

By Alison Flood in The Guardian (3/8/16) – Even JK Rowling is self-pubbing!

“Ranging from the Native American legend of the skinwalkers to the Salem witch trials, JK Rowling is about to release a series of new stories about the magical world to be found across the Atlantic from Hogwarts.”

“Rowling’s website Pottermore published the first installment in the new series, Magic in North America,” on 3/8 at 2pm GMT, with three more stories to follow at the same time every day until today! “Pottermore promised the new writing from Rowling would ‘bring to light the history of this previously unexplored corner of the wizarding world'”.

“The stories arrive ahead of the release of the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in November. Set in New York, 70 years before the events of the Harry Potter books, the film stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, author of the titular textbook which is used at Hogwarts.”

The Elephants in the Room

From Publisher’s Weekly and The Bookseller (3/10/16)

Digital Book World 2016 (DBW), a multi-day conference for those in the book industry which ran this year from March 7-9th in New York City, featured many speakers, including Data Guy, the analyst behind the Author Earnings website, who expressed concern over, “…the tricky business of how to count the horde of self-published e-books that arrive on the scene bearing no ISBN.

“Do we care as an industry about small and non-traditional publishers?’ he asked.”  Good question, DG.  He also noted that, ‘We run the risk of leaving money on the table, or not seeing competitive threats,’ if what we’re working with is an incomplete picture”.

Co-organizer Mike Shatzkin also spoke, “delivering a survey of the changes in the book industry since the first DBW in 2010. He cited the loss of Borders, the continuing downsizing of B&N, agency pricing, the aforementioned e-book price-fixing case, and the rise of a “massive community” of self-published indie authors. This last group, he noted, includes hundreds of authors that “are making a living” publishing and selling books without traditional publishers.”

Amen to that.
