An astrophysicist marooned in a parallel universe attempts to find and rescue his brother and keep himself and his friends safe from ruthless human and alien villains alike.

Lucas Ramsay has been stranded on Earth Outpost Eutopia-3 for a while now – and it isn’t even his universe, but that of his mentor, Dr. Kleezebee. He is desperate to find his brother, Drew, tormented by a mysterious presence in his mind, and forced to take up arms against the town’s “boss” Cyrus, who stole technology of theirs in order to take power. Amidst all of this, Lucas is also chasing Carrie Anne, the local baker’s daughter. But a political power dispute, a local drug dealer, and the discovery of a new alien race with strange and fearsome powers complicate matters substantially.  Can Lucas find his brother, rescue Carrie Anne from danger, and face down all of his enemies without losing either his life or his sanity?

This is, like its predecessor Linkage, a lively novel, full of action and adventure. There is never a shortage of activity to keep the reader’s interest, and the story, having gained momentum in the previous book, moves at breakneck pace from event to event, with surprises and plot twists galore. Lucas has developed a bit as a character since the last book, and his personality, while somewhat more ruthless, is also more three-dimensional than it was. The Krellian Empire are aliens out of nightmares, but the human villains manage to rival them for chilling effectiveness.

The plot has so many villains and so many twists that at times it can become difficult to follow and even somewhat confusing. There are some events and developments that happen offstage between Linkage and INCURSION that needs a bit more explaining – among other things, the only-partly-explained appearance of the character of Master Fuji, a mathematician who can tap into all human knowledge via the Akashic Field. The relationship between Lucas and Carrie Anne needs a bit more development, and perhaps a bit more emotion – at the moment, she tends to go back and forth from “convenient, but not all that attractive, outlet for Lucas’s sexual urges” to “person Lucas genuinely cares about”.

INCURSION will provide high-energy action, dramatic developments and adrenaline-packed reading pleasure.
