James McAllen on his IRDA Winning “Split Rock Road”

split rock bigWhat is the name of the book and when was it published?

Split Rock Road was published in February of 2013 via CreateSpace.

What’s the book’s first line?

The first line is from a story titled “Love and Lizards.”  “He was delighted the first time he saw the lizards.”

What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.

Split Rock Road is a collection of short stories about ordinary people is less-than-ordinary situations.

What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?

From the time I was a small child, I loved to observe strangers and ponder their lives; contemplating what they did and why they did it, starting with the imaginary friend that I played with in the backyard. Plus, I wanted to be Hemingway.

What’s the most distinctive thing about the main character? Who-real or fictional-would you say the character reminds you of?

Being a collection of stories, there is no “main” character, but having said that Andrew from Ashes and Dust is my favorite. His inability to quit despite overwhelming circumstances inspires me every day.

What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?

From a content standpoint, it’s the variety of characters and settings that I would find interesting, but there is also the fact that indie writers are a force to be reckoned with and can no longer be dismissed or ignored.
