Sheri Bloom on her IRDA Winning “Out of the Rabbit Hole”

What is the name of the book and when was it published?

Our book is “Out of the Rabbit Hole: A Road Map to Freedom from OCD”  The book was published in June 2013.

What’s the book’s first line?

“It was the middle of the night, and I was about five years old. I was meant to be fast asleep on my grandparents’ makeshift cot in their kitchen; only I couldn’t get to sleep. The light on their porch bled between the cracks in the blinds. So I turned the blinds to face the other way. But there was still that blaring light. I turned away from the light and burrowed my head under the covers.”

What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.

Over six million people in the United States suffer from an anxiety disorder known as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The average person takes seven years before getting help for OCD. With over fifteen years of experience treating patients struggling with OCD, Dr. Suzanne Mouton-Odum offers readers hope and guidance for conquering what is a very treatable problem. Fiction writer, Sheri Bloom, a woman who was diagnosed and mastered OCD, shares an intimate account of her personal journey out of the land of compulsions and into a world of freedom. Out of the Rabbit Hole: A Roadmap to Freedom from OCD is part journal, part therapy and one-hundred percent inspiration for tackling an often unspoken, yet common disorder.

What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?

Sheri is a sufferer of OCD and Suzanne Mouton-Odum, Ph.D. is a psychologist who specializes in treating OCD. These authors combined efforts to produce a book about healing from OCD.  The inspiration was Sheri’s amazing story about her journey down and, eventually out of the rabbit hole of OCD.  Sheri is truly an inspiration to readers with and without OCD.

What’s the most distinctive thing about the main character? Who-real or fictional-would you say the character reminds you of?

Sheri is inspirational in her vulnerability, her sense of humor, and her courage.  She is a role model for all who suffer with this disabling disease.

What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?

This book is not only about healing from OCD, it is a great story!  Sheri exemplifies how to use life’s misfortunes to strengthen and bolster herself.  She is a great example of “post-traumatic growth.”  Dr. Mouton-Odum gives solid, direct advice about how to conquer fear and move toward a life of freedom from anxiety.
