We love superheroes. We adore magic-wielding teens. And we go completely bonkers over sexy vampires.
Are you a reader who gobbles up all things super-powered? Do you yearn for the supernatural? If your favorite books follow protagonists with a sixth sense, magic powers or a cosmic sense of wisdom, you’ll want to check out one of these super-powered (indie) protagonists featured below.
Devil Music by Carly Oroz
You can’t go wrong with a rock ‘n’ roll-playing demon and his supernatural bandmates. When the bodies hit the floor at the hands of a serial killer, Cain–a demon on a mission to find his master’s son a girlfriend–finds himself thrust into an intriguing plot on the streets of LA.
The world is quite fun, with a Neil Gaiman-esque mix of the divine mixed with standard, everyday life. Mystery lovers should enjoy this book featuring a whole troupe of shape shifting and psychic musicians banding together to stop a killer.
Grey Daze by Michael Allan Scott
Another energetic thriller, Grey Daze follows psychic detective Lance Underphal as he seeks out the person who murdered his love interest’s uncle. But he’s not the only one we’re watching: a former Navy SEAL meanwhile pieces together parts of the puzzle.
The two protagonists contrast one another well, though Underphal’s psychic powers will impress readers a la Sherlock Holmes’ cunning deductive reasoning. You might guess that a psychic solving a murder might present little mystery–while this may be the case here, the book is still an exciting, action-packed adventure.
The Saeshell Book of Time by Rusty Biesele
A strange, psychedelic story set in the future, Biesele’s book presents a strange world in which the “Sophistans” choose two child prodigies to learn their customs and someday rule the planet. The Sophistans are unsettling and odd, speaking in a telepathic language reflected on the page with a different font color. Readers will learn about the Sophistans’ practice of child sacrifice in working towards evolving the human race, as our children protagonists are tasked to reproduce the next generation.
If you’re a fan of The Giver, you’ll probably be interested in The Saeshell Book of Time.
Magekiller by Sarah Chapman
Here we have a story about a society that is sharply segregated, and the people who seek to unify it. First there are the magicians, men who wield powerful magic. On the other hand are the “mage killers,” or women who are immune to magic and keep the mages in check. A stir is caused when Alar, a young woman with the abilities of a mage killer, sides with an especially powerful magician named Kane.
As they work together to establish a magic school for males and females alike, how will society respond?
Mythborn by Vijay Lakshman
Here we have a brilliant high fantasy novel in which–once again–mages are feared. But this time around, an epoch of persecution against mages is over following a war to defeat a demon–who now seems to be making a return. Factions of mages, dragons, demons and more are now competing to subdue the new threat, but at what cost?
This is a book with a fully-realized, living world that readers won’t want to leave.
Note: Many of the titles featured in this story are also available through IndieBound. Enjoy!
