Gage Hartline is certain that he is under surveillance after stumbling upon several hidden Jewish diaries while on a covert assignment. The diaries disclose vital information that alludes to Hitler’s half-Jewish daughter who may be in her seventies, if still alive. Gage shares this news with his girlfriend Monika Brink and the two seek the expert advice of Monika’s book collector cousin, which initiates a chain reaction of deadly events since others are after the valuable books. When Monika is murdered, investigators discover Gage’s shady past and earmark him as her assailant. Even though Gage has cops after him and miscreants want the valuable diaries, Gage decides that it’s time for revenge now that the woman he loves has been ripped from his life.
Driskill builds an action-packed tale laced with World War II history. Set over a two-month period primarily in Germany, Driskill divides his third person narrative into three sections. Aptly titled “The Discovery,” “The Chase,” and “The Vengeance,” Driskill fills these story portions with a full cast that combines mobsters, agents, a US investigator (who is supposed to be on vacation), and a host of people who happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Besides all of the above-mentioned literary tools, Driskill also keeps his plot moving briskly from one cliffhanging chapter to the next by constantly alternating between edgy unanticipated character scenes. Driskill punctuates his scenes with poignant diary entries, Gage’s personal struggles, a multitude of twists and turns, and a surprising encounter with Hitler’s daughter that together draw to an unexpected close.
A fast paced read, THE DIARIES is a gripping tale filled with surprises.
