Master Voider Democryos can manipulate the fundamentals of space by entering the void, showing him the atoms that make-up people and things. In service to the King, he oversees training of pupils identified with the gift of manipulating the void. Democryos is a powerful man in the Northern Kingdom. Yet, when his former pupil and wife, Lady Marine, runs away with a man who appears to be her lover, he sets off a cascading series of events that leaves Democryos finding new friends, questioning his gifts and discovering secrets that change how he views the world.
Revelations hide behind every turn in THE INDIVISIBLE AND THE VOID. Democryos travels with a member of the king’s harem, Chimeline, in tow to find Lady Marine. Slowly but with wonderful writing and beautiful pacing, author D.M. Wozniak unveils an intricate connectedness among the characters met as Democryos rides across the Kingdom toward a seaside town that harbors a sunken secret about the void. Each key character is nuanced and realized fully: il-Colu, the former ship helmsmen and now drug farm overseer; an unnamed religious Effulgent who confronts Democryos about the void and Submaster Voider Mander, who appears to live a double life. With great writing, Democryos, his companions, and his enemies come alive, all woven together to form an engaging and entertaining story.
Yet, THE INDIVISIBLE AND THE VOID leaps beyond an amazing fantasy and science fiction tale. Wozniak tells the story of Democryos on top of meaningful questions that give the novel a tantalizing weight. The journey stands in for all human quests into the unknown. Democryos finds himself confronted with profound choices centering on the question: Is he living an ethical and moral life? When he steps into the void, what is he gaining and what is he losing? Democryos learns the uncomfortable facts of his and his people’s origins, and then must make a decision about how to proceed.
THE INDIVISIBLE AND THE VOID captivates, enlightens and delights. Imaginative and provocative, the story winds through a wonderful, imaginary land filled with page after page of repercussions and revelations on what it means to journey, unflinchingly into the truth.
