RIDESHARES, WRECKS, AND SEX is a peephole into the life of the modern day cab driver. The screwed up Picasso painting that is Joe’s day to day life in his BMW is wild, outlandish, and will leave readers enraptured from the first page until the last.

When convicted felon Joe Schmo signed up to drive for Uber, he never expected to be involved in a bank robbery. Despite that, he’s determined to keep his car “positive, safe, and even fun”—and RIDESHARES, WRECKS, AND SEX collects all of Joe’s best Uber stories in one page-turning piece of creative nonficition.

Joe is a self-proclaimed nice guy. He describes himself as a “30-year-old metrosexual man” with a faux hawk and perfectly trimmed stubble. He gets annoyed when woman call him cute. He uses words like “f’sho” and “hypermammiferous”, intentionally listens to music that has a “niche factor”, and refuses to romantically acknowledge any girl that scores less than a seven on the attractiveness scale. In short: Joe’s a schmuck.

But Joe is aware of his flaws. Joe has realized that his job at Uber is a metaphor for his love life: an attractive girl gets in, warms the seat, then gets out again. Joe’s internal conflict is represented by the metaphorical angel/devil duo that sit on his shoulders (represented by Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger). While using the two actors to represent Joe’s internal conflict can be cringeworthy, their conversations and the moral quandaries that Joe faces are the meat and bones of RIDESHARES, WRECKS, AND SEX.

While Joe struggles with his identity, he encounters a colorful cast of Uber fares. Being an Uber driver is “like being on an African safari tour”. Through Joe, readers get a glimpse into the lives of the unusual people that get into his BMW. Connecting to an Uber driver turns a stranger into an instant (if temporary) friend. Joe is pulled into unexpected adventures at every turn, which makes for a fast-paced, unpredictable story.

RIDESHARES, WRECKS, AND SEX takes Joe all over the Phoenix, Arizona area. Joe writes about Old Town’s white Christmas lights, Central Phoenix’s “destination location” aesthetic, and Mill Avenue’s college crowd. One glance at his customers and Joe can guess whether they’d prefer a ritzy club like Cake or the sports bar feel of Majerle’s. He shares his inside info with the reader, making them an honorary member of the super secret club of Uber’s Arizona experts.

RIDESHARES, WRECKS, AND SEX is a peephole into the life of the modern day cab driver. The screwed up Picasso painting that is Joe’s day to day life in his BMW is wild, outlandish, and will leave readers enraptured from the first page until the last.
