Verdict: TORN: A FORENSIC ROMANCE offers exactly what the title promises - an action-filled forensic adventure combined with intense romance - and the result is a delightfully warming diversion for a cozy snow day.
Lt. Col. Nicholas Wade, in disgrace after making public his disillusionment with the Canadian military’s handling of a drug case that left a friend of his and two others dead, is sent to serve as a forensic pathologist in the city of Westbury. His immediate subordinate is Savanna Jones, who is tracking down evidence to convict a serial killer. He recognizes her instantly as the one-night-stand he’s never been able to forget- but she’s dealing with a crumbling marriage, a new pregnancy, and some intrusive secrets from her past. Can they solve their personal issues long enough to fall in love, while tracking down a murderer and a drug ring?
TORN is a steamy romance with enough CSI-style mystery to keep the pages from melting. The story is entertaining and engaging until the end, with likeable, fully-human characters and a lively plot. The chemistry between Nicholas and Savanna is intense from the very beginning, and the love scenes are hot and passionate. The mystery part of the novel is action-packed and full of intriguing twists and turns, keeping the outside-the-bedroom energy going strong as well. Minor characters add color and emotional force to the story – Savanna’s affectionate but thoroughly non-romantic friendship with her partner Matthew Quinn, for example, is particularly well done.
The political and legal aspects of the job are not neglected, but neither are they dwelt upon to the point of dullness. The breakdown of Savanna’s marriage and the beginning of her romance with Nicholas are dealt with perhaps a bit too quickly and suddenly for emotional realism, and the sheer coincidence of their meeting up again at this particular moment in this particular way is almost Dickensian. Also, the sex scenes suffer a bit from the common failing of romance novels, in the overuse of words like “throbbing,” and “pulsating,” to the point where the language becomes almost comical – but that’s a minor quibble.
TORN: A FORENSIC ROMANCE offers exactly what the title promises – an action-filled forensic adventure combined with intense romance – and the result is a delightfully warming diversion for a cozy snow day.
