A fantastical showdown between the heavenly host and the sinister demons: MASTERS’ MYSTERIUM: LAS VEGAS

by R.R. Reynolds

Verdict: Eminently readable and difficult to put down, MASTERS’ MYSTERIUM: LAS VEGAS is a unique variation on the angels-and-demons mythos set against the blistering heat of the Nevada desert and clanging slot machines.

In the aftermath of Wisconsin Dells, humanity learns to live alongside angels and demons. That is until the demons’ master plan to usher in a new age begins in earnest. Familiar characters return to face a new evil in a dusty town outside of Las Vegas in an epic showdown.

Fleeing the military lockdown of Creekside, Trudy Masters and friends travel cross country to witness the formation of a new ladder in Calamity, just outside Las Vegas. The ladder, a transportation method for angels, is weak and needs a community of angels and humans to blossom. Trudy, her healer fiancé, and a host of colorful characters guard the town while her father chases the all-mighty dollar. A new player on the scene backs the construction of a new Mysterium on the Vegas Strip, but that is merely a cover for a more sinister plan. Angels and demons face down on the Strip, powers grow, humanity awakens to myths striding the Earth, and all involved stand at the precipice of a new age…one where regular humans may have no part to play.

MASTERS’ MYSTERIUM: LAS VEGAS is the second entry in the series but it is accessible to new readers. The strong mythology and dynamic world-building quickly capture readers’ attention while the pacing refuses to let go. Characters are fully realized, even the minor ones, with realistic and laugh-out-loud dialogue. Rachel, an angel, steps in when an old woman offers a payment to the healer for his magical cure. Her quick devouring of home-baked cookies is but one hilarious moment in the book. Reynolds has crafted an excellent urban fantasy saga that genre fans, mainstream readers, and pretty much everyone will hesitate to put down. Despite some awkward exposition early on, very minor typos, and a tad bit too many POV characters, this is an engaging and fun look at biblical mythology on the Vegas Strip.

Eminently readable and difficult to put down, MASTERS’ MYSTERIUM: LAS VEGAS is a unique variation on the angels-and-demons mythos set against the blistering heat of the Nevada desert and clanging slot machines.
