BLIND THRUST, spins a thrilling tale of what can happen when humans mess with Mother Nature.

Author Samuel Marquis’ thriller should not be confused for a romance novel. Although the title sounds like it might have a steamy quality to it, BLIND THRUST is actually a term used in earthquake and geological lingo. The story revolves around an environmental geologist named Joseph Higheagle who discovers that his boss, billionaire tycoon Charles Prometheus Quantrill, might actually be causing deadly earthquakes with his illegal drilling operations. The action continually amps up as more earthquakes and deaths occur, and Joseph must gather enough evidence to take down one of the most powerful men in America.

BLIND THRUST definitely has the science to back up a plot filled with well-drilling and seismic events. There are complicated descriptions of geology and environmental issues that provide the novel with realistic dialogue and illustrations of what the scientists are researching. However, for those not familiar with terms like hydro-fracking, tectonic adjustments, or subsurface sequestering, it can often feel like textbook reading for a geology class instead of a fun thriller read.

Aside from the convoluted and academic language, Marquis does successfully create a conflict that the protagonist has to conquer – whether to go up against a powerful figure for the greater good or stay silent once his loved ones have been threatened. This conflict drives the novel and results in Joseph being a completely well-rounded character. However, Joseph’s actions are predictable, as is much of the plot. There aren’t many twists or turns in the storyline, which can take away from the intensity of the action.

Another aspect that slightly detracts from the novel is the inclusion of several minor characters that don’t add anything to the story. It can be confusing to be introduced to people that work for Quantrill or scientists that work for other scientific organizations that don’t really have anything to do with the core plot. Other than Joseph, there are also other researchers that find themselves enmeshed in the storyline without any real reason for being there.

For those interested in earthquakes or environmental issues, Marquis has created an action-packed novel filled with danger and conflict.
